    Oil Soaked Stock

I've been all over the place including our own site and still need some advice. On my new stock the butt is very oil soaked. I've used a mix of BLO and turpentine as a scrub but want to clean area up without loosing the color of the rest of the stock. This picture is before any cleaning. What would you guys recommend?

Only thing I can think of to use is acetone, but, it may require wiping down the whole stock. If the stock was stained at all, it will remove some of the stain as well. However, you won't raise the brain so there would be no sanding involved. Use a day and no steel wool unless it is necessary due to a thick finish on the stock. If you use steel wool use 0000 and either use easy swirling motions of go in the direction of the grain. Do not use excessive pressure.

If you have a heat gun (or maybe even a hand held hair dryer would work), play the hot air over the areas you want to clean and wipe off the oil with paper towels as it bubbles out of the stock. This is a variation of the "wrap in paper towels, place in a black trash bag, and put on the dashboard of a car with the windows closed in the summer" technique. Never actually tried this myself.

The "black trash bag" with the stock wrapped in shop towels always worked great for me. I've used that method on several of my Garand's...with good results (wife got a little funny with me using her car though).

Without a complete strip and redo, you're always going to have a oilier butt than the rest of the wood.

The "towel/trashbag on the dash in a good Texas summer day" will do a lot, but you'll never get it all.

The worst is usually around the butt plate as the oil gets into the end grain which absorbs faster than the side grain.
