    TO: Mini14.com.

Back in the 80's if you wanted to buy an M1 Garand from the DCM you had to prove participation in Service Rifle Matches. To get that done I bought my first centerfire rifle which was a 183 series Mini-14.

Turned out to be not a good candidate for sling shooting, but I qualified anyway and got a DCM Garand.

Years later, my fiancee decided she wanted to compete in NRA Highpower competition. I started her off with the Mini-14. By then I had added an aftermarket M14 style flash supersor - the rifle looked liked a runt M14.. She showed up for a club match, 200 yards with pits. After checking out the rifle one of the guys told her: "he only gave you half a gun".

Fast forward three years and she took the Missouri Women's Service Rifle Championship shooting her own M1A Supermatch.

The Mini-14 was her path forward.

Another fast forward at the same club. She showed up with a Remington 40X bolt gun repeater in 7.62 caliber. Before the match started that rifle was in the rack behind the line, hers was the only .30 cal rifle there, the rest were AR15 5.56mm types. The same guy who kidded her about having "half a gun" said "look at this, the only real rifle here is owned by a woman."

I still have my Series 183 Ruger Mini-14. Has Tech Sights on it now.
“After all is said and done, successful rifle shooting on the range is nothing more than first finding a rifle and lot of ammunition which will do precisely the same thing shot after shot, and then developing the same skill in the rifleman.” ~ Capt. E. C. Crossman (The Book of the Springfield)
