Today in 1991 The Air Campaign of Desert Storm Launched

Damn it feels like it was just yesterday when the Chief of Bomber Ops came to us and said we were launching B52's equipped with Air Launch Cruise Missiles from Barksdale AFB La, and Wurtsmith AFB Mi. The Barksdale crews returned to base after the attack and the Wurtsmith guys recovered into Jedda. We couldn't have done this mission with out our nations capability of inflight refueling. No nation on earth has that robust of a capability.

And in retaliation, Saddam launched SCUDs towards Riyadh.

We celebrated the start of the war.

Re: Today in 1991 The Air Campaign of Desert Storm Launched

I can still remember this night as if it had been just a week ago or so......we had finished the 10 days long validating FX of basic training the day before, and were about to be sworn in. That evening cadre had organised a BBQ off post for the whole training company. After only a few hours 90% of the recruits were totally shitfaced as they where just 17, 18 years old and couldn't hold their drink. When we came back to the barracks the hand full of older guys, who were still in working order, put the younglings to bed, cleaned up the mess and put the worst cases under a cold shower too sober them out. Once we were done we thought that we deserved a "reward", so we broke into the locker of one of the drunken guys, as we knew that he was hiding a bottle of scotch and some cans of beet in it. We also found a very small handheld TV, when we finally got some reception we watched CNN and suddenly the breaking news that the air war had started and live feed from Baghdad and all. We drank beer and Scotch while watching the air attacks and at reveille we got the whole crew, many still quite drunk, organised for the morning PT.

Re: Today in 1991 The Air Campaign of Desert Storm Launched

I retired January 31, 1990; at the conclusion of my retirement ceremony, I leaned over and whispered to my wife “watch and see if we (U.S.) don’t start some shit over there, and I’ll be recalled”. Her reply was “can they (Army) do that”. The look I flashed her, and she knew they (Army) could. That September I transitioned into a nice high school teaching job up in Montgomery County Maryland. After nearly 30 years in uniform I was struggling to blend in as a civilian…my wardrobe never matched. My wife was working very hard to reshape me… still is LOL. Well, as I predicted I received a phone call from St. Louis MO that I was being recalled to active duty and I had a report date of February 1st 1991 to Fort Meade to take a physical, new ID card, etc. My orders had me reporting to Dover AF base…what the hell, I’m Army???? After a few phone calls I learned that I was being assigned to the casualty reporting/notification office, NLT February 20th. Well back at Fort Meade I didn’t make it through the physical; I just had some dental work done which required a tooth extraction. The doctor DQ me and said I needed to come back in 90 days for a re-exam, he would notify St. Louis. About four months later I got another call from St Louis, they wouldn’t need me at this “time”, I asked the Major on the other end what he meant by “time”? His reply was, you know you still belong to Uncle Sam until you’re 60…I replied “OH”. I never got another call, this coming February I’ll be 73… I guess they don’t need a 73 year old Sergeant Major. That’s how I remember the date.

The work center I was on duty at had a computer that was tied into NORADS missile warning systems. So there we sit happy as pigs in the mud when the Screen starts flashing red and its reporting on the SCUD launches and the estimated targets. All I could say was oh crap now this is going to change things.

Sgt Major I'm glad you didn't have to perform that duty.

We had a couple of Patriot batteries not far from our motorpool. We could clearly hear them in quarters when they would fire off.

Some folks in our company held "SCUD watching parties" on the roof (multi-story building), I declined, thought it was about the dumbest idea ever; falling debris and all that noise.

Thanks m1ashooter. In-between my Vietnam tours (1967ish) I was detailed to escort duty for three soldiers killed in Vietnam, it's a memory that has never left me. Being assigned to causality notification duty really left a pit in my stomach...I would rather had been a Private over in the sand box pulling a trigger. I guess you can say I was saved by a tooth loss...
