    M4 Bayonet Handle Repair

    Hi

I was going through some stuff at my parents house and found a Utica M4 bayonet that my uncle brought back from the Marines. Don't know if he liberated from his time as a DI at Paris Island or if he carried it at the Chosen. I found that the leather handle was missing some washers. I just ordered some replacements from Kabar and watched videos on you tube, but I can find nothing about taking the pommel apart. Anyone every done this? The other option is taking the washers off and replacing with plastic grips,

I think the end of the tang is staked on (hammered into a mushroom).

I bet you can grind off that mushroomed part, similar to bradding on copper rivets on harness and saddles. Then you'll have to brad it back down with a ball pein hammer, at least that is how I would do it.

Well its finished. I split the leather washer, then used a belt sander and files to shape the leather, it doesn't look factory new but it does blend to the rest of the handle. It was a fun project.
