Re: 03 Ready for the season.

I've seen the M1903 and 03A3 rifles fitted with a Lyman or Redfield rear sight and maybe a Lyman #17 front sight to boot referred to as a "poor man;s match rifle". Many were set up that way when 03's were more affordable and a new Model 70 target was just too hard on the check book.

Mine was set up in the early 30s. My understanding is that it has had barrel changes over the years.

Re: 03 Ready for the season.

Shot a mil bolt action challenge this morning.
Giving it a try. Tough for these old eyes to hit the 6 oclock on a moving grey cloud, but it's fun anyway. Best excuse I could think of on short notice for not cleaning it. Humor.
Springfield 03 140 mil range HS 5-44 barrel Lyman rear sight.
Ammo 150 fb Berger over 48.5 gr of 4064.

    97- 2x

Re: 03 Ready for the season.

Got out this morning with the 03. 150 gr Bergers over 55 gr of 4350. I can see that I am going to have to load some 110 gr Sierra gallery loads if I want to continue to shoot this. The 600 yd plus full loads are a killer. Shot 2 10 rnd sets and even with the Limbsaver I am done for the day. I am doing exactly what I taught folks not to do over the years, anticipating the recoil.

99-4x for this one. Now I am going to have disqualify this darn target all together. Looking carefully at the target there appear to be 11 shots on it. So it will become a 98-3x. Looks an awful lot like a double at 7 in the 9 ring. Oh, crappola. Getting old and can't even count anymore.

edited. Missed the darn date in the photo and 11 shots on the target. Good practice anyway.
