I believe the newest version of the m110a1 is the HK variant..

    Re: M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System

Sometime ago, after the KA M110 had been in country for a while, I saw a number of statements that they were having some problems with them. I also exchanged posts/emails with someone who had actually used one in battle and his experience with it was good.

So I really am unsure of how good they are in actual combat conditions.
There were a lot worse places than Phu Bai and they weren't all in Viet Nam.

    Re: M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System

I have three .308 AR's, one of the older DPMS rifles with 24 inch barrel, a DPMS Generation II with 24 inch barrel and a Spikes Tactical with 24 inch barrel. All three have been very reliable for me and very accurate. I have even slinged up with the Gen II model, it's very well proportioned, doesn't have the truck axle feel, the other two have!

Not sure if the three would be suitable for a two way range, but they seem very well made. I can see why issuing these to designated marksmen or snipers would be ideal, because the troops are very familiar with the M16 family of rifles already.

    Re: M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System

Not sure what the price was for the full kit 10 years ago, but it was reportedly a lot of $$:

30 years ago, circa 1988, the first 500 M24s with the kit were $5000, and dropped to $3900 afterwards

....Here's the M24 SWS replacement, probably a lot of $$ for that kit too:
