Re: Why are Handloads More Accurate Than Factory Ammo?

For a lot of people, they aren't, especially when talking about Federal Gold Match.

The only reason I prefer to load my own 25-06 is so that I can select the pill and powder. Factory 25-06 is pretty limited.

Re: Why are Handloads More Accurate Than Factory Ammo?

In my experience your own loadings were usually more accurate than factory likely due to attention to details. With technology today this is mostly negated.

Today I'd say that it's not even a cost savings anymore unless you shoot a helluva lot, or you shoot a hard to find or a wild cat caliber.

Yep, if all you want is a quickie, hastily dumping your load, then you don't much care about the products performance !

Yep, lets say you have about $1500 in loading equipment, added to the investment of ammo components that each time it will take to produce a 1,000 round of high performance ammo, you can figure it's going to be awhile before you break even and even then, each round will roughly cost you $.84 ! You can find Federal Gold Medal 6.5 Creedmoor for $22.99 /$1.15 Per Round. Now what is your time worth, may also be a factor ?

Re: Why are Handloads More Accurate Than Factory Ammo?

    When I first got into reloading, . . . 40+ years ago, . . . I tried developing a load for my Colt AR.

I used IMR 3031, . . . it turned out to be a slightly packed charge with I believe 26+ grains in each round.

    Took em to the range, . . . 10 rounds down range, . . . 100 yds, . . . cover em all with a quarter.

I've never had "store bought" ammo shoot that well.

    May God bless,

Re: Why are Handloads More Accurate Than Factory Ammo?

    There are likely several factors...
Each rifle is a bit different from the next one. So you can taylor make your handloads with a quality bullet, seated to the right COAL, just the right powder charge, etc.

Re: Why are Handloads More Accurate Than Factory Ammo?

I started reloading rifle ammunition because shooting 88 rounds of Federal GMM twice , and sometimes ,three times a month in Service Rifle matches was impossible to afford. I found that my handloads were about equal of the good stuff. Whether they were more accurate is something I couldn't determine since I only shot GMM or M852 when it was issued or given to me. With the brass being the most expensive part of the equation reusing brass fired in the same chamber seemed as good as new brass.
I discount the cost of my time since it's a part of the entire match process. Rifle and equipment maintenance, dry fire practice plus reloading made for a total consuming adventure.
When I started I thought I was cockey buying 200 bullets at a time. It wasn't long before I was buying 2000 at a time. Buy in bulk and save right? WRONG! You end up shooting more.

Re: Why are Handloads More Accurate Than Factory Ammo?

I would guess that most handloads are not more accurate than the best factory ammunition. Bullets are the most critical component and Sierra was founded because their founders thought they could make a better bullet (in all types, not just match types.) For a long time they did, and by staying out of the ammunition business, they were able to sell their products to ammo makers.

For some time now, ammo makers have been producing premium lines using better quality bullets (some even advertising the use of Sierras) so that more accurate ammo is available such that the less precision handloaders can easily buy better ammo instead of trying to make it themselves. But there are still cheaper lines using less precision bullets.

Then again, some shooters don't really care much and will go out of their way to shoot old, surplus ammo. To each his own.
There were a lot worse places than Phu Bai and they weren't all in Viet Nam.
