    Re: History of M118 Ammo

I was fortunate enough to be involved in what some have called "The Golden Age" of High Power rifle shooting. M118 was the first of the issued Match ammo. It required a barrel with deep grooves typically 4 grooves for the best accuracy which happened to be what the M1's and 14's carried. It was strange to get 50 rounds of match ammo and shoot a Leg Match all for $4. As the article stated Mex-Matching Sierra bullets greatly improved accuracy although that proved to be best with 6 groove barrels. M852 appeared and the scores reflected the improvement. Some shooters came to events with two rifles. Each tuned to whatever ammo type was issued. It was the best of times from my perspective.
