This is correct. I read somewhere that was the reason the Marines did not want to give up there .03's for the M1 Garand. They could shoot
higher scores with the .03 and continue getting the extra pay. Of course this changed during the Guadacanal battle when they found out the
Garand was more effective against the Japanese.

When I was in Boot Camp the Recruits in our Platoon that shot Expert stood in formation and were given a cookie to eat. The rest of the Platoon
did pushup for not shooting Expert. Me? I missed the cookie by 3 points.....

    Re: Old Timers Competition

I was in ITR at Camp Pendleton right after boot camp, when we had company formation.
A gunny and several officers were there while we were at attention.

    The gunny called out,
"All those who fired expert step out on this line!"

There were about a dozen or so of us that form a new line, then the gunny yelled out,
"Count of by two's loud and clear!"

    Afterwards he said,
"All the ones get on that first bus, your going to Force Recon! Two's get on the second bus, your going to Scout Sniper School !"

    I was a two.

Roy Geiger should be the one seated on the right. Camp Geiger was named for him. Amazing career. General “Red Mike” Edson whom Edson Range was named after was another stellar career. His exploits with the USMC shooting team as both shooter and leader/trainer are legendary.

    Re: Old Timers Competition

The highest qualification score in our BCT company got 30 days of recruiter duty in his home town as the reward. He was a good guy and deserved it.
I got the second highest score - by one hit. I got a bus ride to Ft. Bliss, Texas.

And what did a Marine do in Ft. Bliss, TX? Were you really at Biggs Field?
There were a lot worse places than Phu Bai and they weren't all in Viet Nam.

    Re: Old Timers Competition

Bingo! ADA. If it flies it dies.

There were jarheads at Ft. Bliss though, learning how to to use the little Hawk missile:

I remember a particularly cold day in a chow line and we Army Missile Men were shivering and shucking and jiving about how dang cold it was. The dogfaces in the line though, were just standing there, unphased. We just figured the jarheads were too dumb to know it was cold.

(Actually, I was impressed by how they didn't mind the icesicles hanging from their nose hairs.)

EDIT: Before I catch hell from you jarheads out there, I need to explain that I am no stranger to Marines. One of my best buds is a Vietnam era marine, and my nephew made Gunny this year. My uncle served on a Marine 90mm antiaircraft gun crew at Guadalcanal (bombed the 1st night), Tulagi, and on up the Solomans.

He went ashore under heavy fire at red beach on Guam and later got snarfed to mop up Japs on the island over the following months. He was the nicest man you'd ever meet. Good Christian, loved kids - but hated Japs 'til the day he died. He was a good Marine.

Naw... You jarheads need Army around. Shucks, without Army and Navy to give you our surplus junk, you'd have to fight with sticks and stones! ;)

Looking at a copy of "Provisional Small Arms Firing Manual - 1909". War Dept Doc # 338.

In reading this book I find even the US Army paid more to guys who qualified higher.

    Interesting stuff in this book.
“After all is said and done, successful rifle shooting on the range is nothing more than first finding a rifle and lot of ammunition which will do precisely the same thing shot after shot, and then developing the same skill in the rifleman.” ~ Capt. E. C. Crossman (The Book of the Springfield)
