    Eddie Van Halen Dead at 65

    Eddie Van Halen, one of the greatest guitar players of all time and a founding member of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted hard rock band Van Halen, died of throat cancer, a disease he had battled off and on since 2000. He was 65. The news was confirmed Tuesday afternoon by his son and bandmate, Van Halen bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, via social media.

    “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” Wolfgang posted. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I share with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

                  Naturally this was a topic at work the day after it happened. We are all about the same age and remember Van Halen (not Van Hagar) fondly. One of my customers was visibly affected. He said, "I idolized him. I spent many hours in my room trying to play Eruption. My Dad took off when I was a kid, Eddie's guitar music saved me.". He still plays with a band, but not classic rock, more along the lines of death metal.

                  I always thought Eddie Van Halen was incredibly talented, but I don't think even he knew how much his talent affected people.

                  But I was always pissed at him for stealing my future wife, Valerie Bertinelli. She was the sole reason why I watched One Day at a Time.
                  The older I get, the more I realize "life in prison" is not that much of a deterrent.
