Re: My Home Away From Home 40 Years Ago
Remembering boot camp isn't too hard for most Marines. A test of anyone who claims to be a Marine is to ask the names of his DIs. Another is to ask the service number. Another good one is: Hollywood or the Island? Amazing how quickly you can detect a fraud with a simple question or two.

Another is to ask the service number.
I still remember that! Joined (Army) in August 1968.
There were a lot worse places than Phu Bai and they weren't all in Viet Nam.

My "service number" is my SSN. It's all over the flippin' paperwork.

Most interesting thread about the land based nukes.
As for the SSN, it was required to be on the return address on our mail, and we had little tags with our name and SSN on the that were sewn on our boots, cap, web belt, etc.

Yup. I've got one of those little white tags stitched inside a pile cap and I still have the duffel bag with it spray painted on the side.

They made the change to SSAN during my first year.
