NM op rods for the Garand

Who made National Match op rods for the Garand and what are they worth? Going to look at some parts for sale later this week.

Remington and Springfield are the only manufacturers that I know of. They are bringing a little more than a standard op rod but I'll let someone else chime in regarding value. At one point they were so common that the NM op rods were used in place of standard op rods for rebuilds.

Garand part prices have taken a hit recently. As mentioned many of these ended up being replacement oprods with some of these 77 series oprods not even being marked "NM". If inspec and a good parked finish they seem to be running around $135-130... FWIW

The key to value is of course is the condition of the piston (0.525") and the tab (esp height and width).

Fun factoid as noted in the GCA magazines years ago, the only difference b/t the NM vs. standard M1 op rods was the spec re the precision of the sharp edge at the piston - it was held to a slightly tighter spec on the NM op rod. However, once a NM op rod has been fired a few hundred rounds that sharp edge might be very slightly rounded at the leading edge via friction within the gas cylinder, and thus by use - the NM op rod is likely - from a technical perspective - the same as a standard op rod - aside from the NM stamp. On the upside, installing a new piston with a sharp, defect-free edge along the circumference in essence turns a standard op rod into a NM spec op rod... Of course I kind-of like the 'NM' stamp on the op rod - even if its only for psychological reasons...

The guy told me that they are new. He has yet to climb up in the attic to look for them.

Not sure what I would offer then, maybe around $150. But not BIG bucks....

Thanks for all the input. No telling what's going to come out of this attic! Supposed to be some M14 parts and a bunch of NM ammo too.

That ammo is likely to be non-match ammo having been stored in the heat of an attic.
