Back in the Rifle-Company days, I tracked down the IP address of scammy fake registrants and banned their IP's. Over time I collected a large list of these on a spread sheet and could identify large ranges of international IP's that I could ban by the sweeping boatload. I figured if it weren't North American it didn't have a lot of reason to be there, with a few exceptions.

That worked pretty well for a time until we went with another system involving having registration time open for only a couple of hours per day. That cut the problem down significantly. Van might remember another feature of that system I forgot.

Another item that helped was disallowing any user registering from a gmail account. Gmail is ripe with scum.

I think you should check your records and see how many members have gmail accounts. I do.

It's not that hard to ban each as they come in. They are banned and never see the light of day. They just haven't caught on that I can get them before they can see the forum once registered.

Banned as well as IP. There will be times when a spammer may get through as it's not an exact science, but, If I don't catch em, I know and trust that the staff or membership will. Then they get zapped.

Since installing one more piece of anti-spam, There have been 6 attempts with only one making it through. I can't elaborate as to how I manage to catch most of them but, let's just say that I have my ways.....LOL
