Did some Bing image searches and it looks like they got a "trim" but not a scalping.

Not sure about WWII, but I got Scalped in 1962, It was not a problem for me then because I have always kept my hair short, this is 2022 and I am scalped again, mainly that I am going bald and no longer looking for Women!

Agreed. I used to sport a "high and tight" ever since boot. Now it's more of a "high and eroded" as my hairline above my forehead is going further and further back...
The older I get, the more I realize "life in prison" is not that much of a deterrent.

I wore my hair short before I joined and continued doing so until I came back from a leave with a fresh haircut and at the first inspection upon returning was told to "get a haircut." Started growing it out right then and have worn it semi-long (not hippie long) ever since.
There were a lot worse places than Phu Bai and they weren't all in Viet Nam.
