I always believed the purpose of the short hair was not for hygiene, it was for uniformity. Especially during boot. It didn't matter if you had nice shiny hair, nice curls or waves or whatever. Everyone got scalped because it removed a sense of individuality and made everyone exactly the same; one unit, no individuals. And for the first couple days we all looked like walking Q-Tips.

I had a full beard in high school (yeah, I was a hairy mutha) from time to time, mainly during the winter, but I always sported a moustache. My Dad informed me, "You better shave off that flavor-saver before you get on the plane, they'll give you grief.". I shaved it off. And he was right. A couple guys on the bus to P.I. looked like they were catalog models for JC Penney's. Wavy shoulder length hair parted in the middle, 'staches coming down past the corners of their mouths (this was the 70's). The D.I.s landed on them like flies on horse shit. "What are you, a porn star ?" "I'm not saying everyone with a moustache is a faggot, but every faggot has one, are you a faggot ??". I silently thanked my Dad.
The older I get, the more I realize "life in prison" is not that much of a deterrent.

Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!! I say that had to be hilarious to say the least. Understandably this is the military and they are there to make you tougher than nails.
In a SHTF situation I will be shaving my head and face, then grabbing a hat to keep the head warm.
