I'm sorry for the really crappy attempt to capture it, but I just had an amazing and unexpected sight when I stepped out to check on the dog and found a swirling column of several dozen hawks riding the thermal over my steel shop roof. I couldn't manage to get a good cellphone photo with noontime sun. It must be a migration gathering, breathtaking!

Are you sure they aren't vultures? We have them up near the northern hacienda like that. We have them near the southern one too, but, not in the numbers like that.

When I first stepped out, they were much lower and more closely grouped and were definitely hawks. By the time I tried to get a photo, they are more distant and look darker in the shot.
