My Wife got me this Colt signature series back in 1994 for Christmas. At the time I had a few NIB Colt pistols.
I soon realized NIB firearms was not my thing ,I at least like to shoot every now and again.This was the only one I kept. Yearly wipe down and inspect. Took a few pics .
These pistols ,just like the 1980 series parts were made by Also Uberti using Colt specs and parts were shipped to Colt in USA for final fit,polish and authentic finishes and markings applied.
Even serialized with the original Colt Army from civil war era.
I did shoot a cylinder full from it back then ,not shot since 1994/1995 ish.
Anyway it sure is Purdy !!
Thing is pretty much all firearms from just about every maker were of this quality. Gun making was at the highest form of achievement and the pride factor was high among men. If you went back in time spent a day in the colt factory or Winchester and could handle the firearms you would be shocked at quality.
No different from craftsman built homes of years past compared to builder grade homes today.
This Army revolver was finished in Colts high polished blue which closely matches in color but a very different process to original Colt blue which was done in charcoal pit by heat. The color case hardening was actually same process ,animal bone char,leather char (carbon) finely packed in a crucible with air tight lid the polished parts absorbed the carbon and created a thin case layer .003-.005 . The quench was done in forced air circulated brine.
The results were beautiful stay of colors .Each maker had different techniques resulting in slight variations.
One of my favorite finishes of old.
Here is an original 1860 production cylinder in near mint shape ,was found in a box apparently unused for over a century. Deep charcoal bluing
One of the prettiest Colts as far as bluing goes, that I can remember were the early Colt's Pythons, they were polished magnificently, in a deep midnight blue !
I ordered a new Colt Single Action Army 45 in 1994 from Colts custom shop , took about 10 months to get and it was beautifully done in high polished blue and bone charcoal color case . Couldn't use it so I traded it .looking back big mistake as the price has almost tripled .
