don't you guys flare your case a bit to stop that? I also use ACME bullets that have a beveled base on them... Also use a final 'taper' crimp die as my last step to fully remove the flare

I've done more flaring and crimping when single-stage loading wadcutters. Jacketed and plated bullets don't have this issue. Even with a slight taper on the base of these bullets, in my Square Deal B press, the case mouth is slightly flared in the powder feed stroke, but not excessively and a semi-circular and very thin "whisker" of lead is produced when seating the cast lead bullet in addition to some of the lube ring. Next step is a mild taper crimp before being ejected into the completed cartridge bin. Over flaring is prone to case mouth cracking in handgun brass and over crimping can lead to poor chambering and reduced accuracy due to bullet diameter reduction.

What is your overall .dia of your loaded rounds blkgunlvr? I set my last 'taper crimp' die to .472 I think and was shooting for .471

btw just loaded up a 50rd box using about 4.4gr of titegroup/200gr ACME swc at 1.208 to try when I can...

Yup. I flare them a bit and finish off with a crimp, but the crimp is done at the end of the seating stroke, if memory serves. So I suppose the bullet is still moving a bit when the crimp sets in. That might be when the shaving happens. It isn't much. Less than .01" I'd guess.

Mine are reading .472 after crimp. The only adjustment that I've made on the press since Dillon's factory setup is charge weight and seating depth.

Thanks blkgunlvr! I will not worry about mine anymore... The pistol that I am shooting now has an Ed Brown barrel in it my gunsmith installed and was wondering if it needed to be tighter but I will not worry now.

I have an old Dillion 350 that was pre square deal B I think I bought in the '80's? Have not used it since then and do not have room where I am now to try using it again... It did make good ammo though as I recall... Thrower is marked 5.1gr 231

Yes! When (using my old RCBS jr press (single stage)) that I use now I had the same issue with shaved brass in the bullet seating process with my LEE 3 die set I bought. Even the coated one's.
I think? I solved it by backing off the seater/crimper die and using it more like a 'seater' die only and using a forth taper crimp die as my last step... I think MY shavings were caused by a mis-adjusted seater/crimp die and now crimp with a separate taper crimp die.

I can't remember whether I have a separate crimping die or not in that caliber. Shoot. :( All the reloading stuff is packed up in boxes and stacked in preparation for a move now too. I hope some day I get to unpack it for use, not disposal.
