thumbs up Dwight knocks another project out of the park!

A review of a project that Dwight?s Leather did for me recently.

I sent Dwight a plastic version of a Tsuba (pronounced tsoooba. The T and S are together as one sound.) A Tsuba is a sword hilt. On a true Japanese Samurai sword, the Tsuba or hilt are made of various metals. Mostly in iron or steel with ornate artwork done in silver, copper and sometimes gold inlay. They have been collector pieces and can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars each depending on the artwork and metal used. During World War II, Samurai swords were mass produced and most had brass Tsuba. It was also not uncommon for an Officer to use his family sword, that sometimes were centuries old, to bring into battle.

The Tsuba on today?s wooden swords or Bokken (Sounds like broken only with no R sound.) are mostly made of plastic or nylon. Bokken are used for practicing sword techniques which is safer than what a real Samurai sword would be.

Having seen some leather versions of Tsuba, I decided that for use on the Bokken I purchased in Japan, I wanted something more special than a plastic version. I showed Dwight a few examples of what I had in mind and sent him the plastic one that I already had fitted to my Bokken as a pattern. The leather Tsuba that Dwight created from my specifications, turned out better than expected. Dwight does excellent work, and I am very happy to be a repeat customer. I have done several projects with Dwight and all are top notch.

Pics below are of the Plastic Tsuba I sent as a pattern, The view from the tip of the Bokken and the view from the butt of the Bokken. As you can see, the scene is duplicated on both sides of the leather Tsuba.

    Actually . . . it was a kind of a "test" project . . .

I picked up a couple of laser engravers . . . and had done some messing around with the lower powered one . . . as it is just enough power to hurt a piece of leather . . . if I go full out.

Lowering the power setting . . . gives me the ability to make it do cute things on leather . . . which of course this was.

It was a bit exasperating at times . . . but either the sweet talk or the big hammer in the corner . . . one talked it into doing it's thing.

It actually burns the leather much like we used to do wood burning projects when us old guys were kids.

    May God bless,
    Dwight
