    More About Chamber Brushes

One of the board officers contacted me and asked me to warn M1-A users about using the M16 chamber brush for cleaning.

Do not expect the M16 chamber brush to attach on to your M14 cleaning rod sections as the threads are different. It was also designed differently due to the large differences in the chambers. It also has a bore type brush on the end to guide it into the M16 bore as it is rotated to clean the chamber. It will not work fit into your chamber as it goes into the M16 from the rear, attached to the M16 cleaning rod section. Your chamber brush has to be threaded in at a right angle of the cleaning rod section. This version will not work.

Now let's discuss real GI chamber brushes versus the reproductions. This kit was sold to me at a gun show a few months ago. The Missouri company has its name printed on the rear of the package. Notice:

    Brush Chamber G.I.
    30.06

They are reproductions from China. They are not US GI.

The top is repro, the bottom is US GI. Notice the difference in the tips.

Reproductions today have the circular tips. They look nice but unfortunately the inside piece that connects the plastic ratchet to the plastic base, often bends and sometimes breaks. They are made very cheaply, although they look beautiful. It also appears that the diameter of the brush's bristles is slightly less than originals.

Originals were produced in the 1960's and had tips that were highly tightened with metal sealed ends.

The above pictures are 30 Caliber. The same applies to the M14 Chamber Brushes, which are slightly shorter.

Go to this page for comparison of different GI versions:

I have a flex cleaning rod with a T-handle. With that, I just use a .45 bore brush in the chamber (with patch wrapped around it, usually).

Side benefit is I'm not smacking the sides of the receiver with cleaning rod segments.

My favorite chamber brush handle is a brass jag or patch loop. They're the right length and made of brass so aren't likely to damage the receiver or finish like steel can.

I should have clarified, nearly all of my brushes are nylon-bristle so that I can use copper solvent.

Most of my .22cal and .30cal brushes are black, whereas the .45 one is a smokey brown color.
