Ok, here is #3 in a series called "I'm new to reloading, and need your help".
I had bought 200 rounds of commercial Federal brass from a small shop near me. I noticed most of it had a ring near the base. After reading alot about the signs of incipient case head separation, and the warning signs, I decided to get 200 rounds of once fired LC brass, as i figured the ring meant it was no good to reload. Upon review of the LC I recieved, lots of the brass I received had the same mark in the same spot.
I have tried the bent paper clip trick, but did not feel any ridge. At first glance, the ring I'm seeing is where the thin part of the walls meet the heavier base, causing what I'm seeing. However, being new to this, I don't want to take any chances.
So, below you will find a picture, attempting to show what I'm talking about.
And shown here is the same case, but open to inspect for thinning in the wall. The bent paper clip shows where the line is on the outside of the case. i cannot see any thinning of the walls whatsoever. Does that mean I am good to load these up? Or is there something I'm missing?
If this is not head case separation, what causes this? And is this the area I would see the separation line? Or would it be further up, as shown in this picture? (Not mine, found it online).
